How to screen mirror a Mac or MacBook to a TV
A Mac has two ways to get its screen onto a TV. AirPlay is built in and works with Apple TV and many newer smart TVs. For every other TV with a web browser, such as a Fire TV Stick or an older smart TV, the web sender shares your Mac screen straight from Chrome or Safari, with nothing to install.
Quick answer
If your TV has AirPlay (Apple TV, Samsung from 2018, LG from 2018, Roku OS 9.4 and newer), click Control Center in the Mac menu bar, click Screen Mirroring and pick the TV. For any other TV with a web browser, open tvee.app on the TV, open tvee.app/start in Chrome or Safari on the Mac, enter the six character code and click Share.
- A Mac or MacBook with Chrome or Safari
- A TV with AirPlay, or a TV with a web browser
- The same Wi-Fi for AirPlay. Same Wi-Fi or the internet for the web sender
Pick your method
Which method works with your TV
Apple TV
Use AirPlay. Apple TV accepts nothing else. See the AirPlay steps below.
Samsung, LG, Hisense and Roku with AirPlay
Samsung TVs from 2018, LG TVs from 2018, Roku devices with Roku OS 9.4 and newer, and some newer Hisense TVs accept AirPlay. Samsung, LG and Hisense also have a web browser, so the web sender is your backup when AirPlay is missing or your Wi-Fi blocks it.
Fire TV
A Fire TV Stick has no AirPlay, and only some Fire TV smart TVs do. Open tvee.app in the Silk browser on the Fire TV and use the web sender on the Mac. The computer to Fire TV guide shows each step.
Chromecast, Google TV and Android TV
Use Chrome on the Mac. Click the More menu, then Cast, save, and share, then Cast. Choose Sources, then Cast screen, and pick your device.
Older smart TVs, Sony TVs and game consoles
Anything with a web browser can be the receiver. Use the web sender steps below. For consoles, see the PS5 and PS4 guides.
Older Roku without AirPlay
These Roku models have no web browser, so a Mac cannot reach them. Mirror from a phone instead with the iPhone to Roku or Android to Roku guide.
Step by step
Mirror a Mac to any TV with the web sender
Open the receiver on the TV
On the TV, open the web browser and go to tvee.app. A six character code and a QR code appear.
Open the web sender on the Mac
On the Mac, open Chrome or Safari and go to tvee.app/start.
Enter the code
Type the six character code shown on the TV and click Connect.
Let the browser record the screen
The first time, macOS asks for permission. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Screen & System Audio Recording, and turn on Chrome or Safari. If macOS asks you to quit and reopen the browser, do so and enter the code again.
Choose your screen and share
Choose Desktop Screen, pick the whole screen or one window, and click Share in Chrome or Allow to Share Screen in Safari.
Your Mac appears on the TV
Your Mac screen now shows on the TV. Stop sharing from the sender when you are done.
Want sound on the TV? Use Chrome, share a Chrome tab and tick Also share tab audio. Safari cannot send sound. If it will not connect, try the troubleshooter.
Mirror with AirPlay (Apple TV and AirPlay TVs)
Connect the Mac and the TV to the same Wi-Fi. Click Control Center in the menu bar, click Screen Mirroring and select your TV. If asked, enter the four digit code from the TV on your Mac. Then choose to share one window, mirror the screen, or extend it. To stop, open Screen Mirroring again and click Stop.

FAQ
Common questions about mirroring a Mac to a TV
Can I mirror a Mac to a TV without an Apple TV?
Yes. Samsung TVs from 2018, LG TVs from 2018, Roku devices with Roku OS 9.4 and newer, and some newer Hisense TVs accept AirPlay directly. Any other TV with a web browser works with the web sender at tvee.app/start.
Why is my TV not listed under Screen Mirroring?
AirPlay needs the Mac and the TV on the same Wi-Fi, and the TV must support AirPlay 2. If the TV still does not appear, use the web sender instead. It works with any TV that has a web browser, even over the internet.
Why does the TV show only my wallpaper or a black screen?
macOS blocks screen capture until you allow the browser. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Screen & System Audio Recording, turn on Chrome or Safari, and reopen the browser.
Can I mirror a Mac to a Fire TV?
Yes. A Fire TV Stick has no AirPlay (only some Fire TV smart TVs do), so open tvee.app in the Silk browser on the Fire TV and use the web sender on the Mac. See the computer to Fire TV guide.
Can I use the TV as a second screen for my Mac?
Yes. With AirPlay, choose to extend the Mac screen instead of mirroring it. With the web sender, follow the wireless second screen guide, which uses an HDMI dummy plug to add the extra display.
Can I send sound from my Mac to the TV?
With the web sender, use Chrome: Share a Chrome tab and tick Also share tab audio. Safari cannot send sound. Sound through the web sender is part of PRO.
Why did mirroring stop after a minute?
Free web-sender sessions are time-limited. Upgrade to PRO to remove the limit and to send sound.
